Metal Chemical Analysis

As a leader in metal chemical analysis, SGS MSi has a complete metal chemical analysis laboratory that includes both optical emission spectrography (OES), inductively coupled plasma (ICP) wet chemical testing and all Leco gas analyzers. Our Chemists have over 30 years’ experience performing chemical analysis of metal alloys.

The following base metals are analyzed by SGS MSi:

  • Plain Carbon Steel
  • Alloy Steel
  • Tool Steel
  • Stainless Steel
  • Cast Iron
  • Ductile Iron
  • Powder Metals
  • Titanium
  • Aluminum
  • Magnesium
  • Tungsten
  • Brass
  • Bronze
  • Copper

Chemical Analysis Testing

The most important step in the chemical analysis process is the preparation of the supplied samples. Shape, size and configuration of the submitted sample all affect the testing procedures. These varying parameters can affect the cost of the analysis if the sample is too small, requires machining or abrasive cutting is needed for high hardness samples.

Small samples, chips, and shavings require different preparation compared to a solid sample. One method of sample preparation is acid digestion of the small sample using a microwave digester. Leco Combustion analysis is used for carbon/sulfur along with the ICP wet chemical analysis for the elemental composition. Our Chemical Analysis lab has the expertise to prepare and process your metallic materials. SGS MSi can always meet your specification and turn-around requirements. The specification often dictates the sample size and required elements to be tested.

SGS MSi can accommodate the following expedited turn-around requirements:

  • Same Day
  • End of Day
  • Next Day
