Mechanical failures are analyzed through characterization of the fracture surfaces by means of visual, stereoscopic, and microscopic (scanning electron microscopy) examinations.  Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) can positively identify the failure mechanisms, including ductile, brittle (transgranular, intergranular, quasi-cleavage), mixed and fatigue.  In combination with mechanical testing of components, chemical testing and microstructural (metallographic) examinations, we can also find out whether the failures were processing-related, heat-treatment-related or operation-related.  The testing can also determine if the materials were suitable for the intended application.

Metallurgical Fracture Analysis

A detailed engineering report will identify the cause of the failures and suggest corrective measures based on the findings.
