Industries Served
When operating environments must sustain high temperatures, loads, and stresses, materials experts turn to forged components
Better understand the performance capabilities of your forgings with assistance from SGS MSi.
We are an A2LA and ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory that utilizes destructive and non-destructive testing methods to identify metallurgical, material chemical and mechanical characteristics ultimately used to determine safety, compliance and application suitability. Our capabilities include:
- Raw material validation
- Production issue solutions
- Finished and semi-finished good assessment
- Product failure analysis
- High-end metallurgical engineering services
Our materials testing laboratory in Melrose Park, IL is staffed by highly trained engineers, scientists, and technicians with years of experience analyzing forging specimens. Examinations we often perform on forgings include:
- Failure analysis
- Grain flow
- Grain size
- Cleanliness
- Macro-etching
- Step bar testing
- Jominy bar
- Tensile
- Charpy
- Hardness
- Case depth
- Microstructure evaluation
- Decarburization
Metallurgical testing offers assurance that materials used are fit for purpose and capable of performing over their expected lifespan. Our team can examine and certify specimens to nearly any industry standard or customer-specific requirement. Materials used as forged components are commonly tested against the following:
Materials we analyze are often in cold-forged, hot-forged, carburized, quenched and tempered, open-die and closed-die conditions, among others. Common material types include low-alloy steel, AISI 4140/4140H, and AISI 5140/5140H, respectively.
Our testing equipment is calibrated regularly to ensure accuracy. Calibration records are available upon request.
When analyzing materials, we provide a detailed report listing the test type performed, parameters and results obtained. We write in clear, simple sentences. All reports are presented with a summary conclusion of our findings, any supporting criterion and, if appropriate, insights into possible failure avoidance.
With a unique combination of knowledge, industry-leading equipment and dedication to accuracy, SGS MSi is your materials testing and engineering services partner.
